San Diego Beach Improvement Group focuses on the beach, especially sports equipment and other amenities like fire pits, bathrooms and more. Since 2002 we have helped Parks & Rec, the City of San Diego and Bill Walton take care of the basketball and beach volleyball courts at South Mission Beach. We raise money to buy nets, lines, rims, paint and other equipments needs for this sports park.
Committed to creating great experiences at the beach, our projects reflect this and support our local beach communities with projects at the beach. Our founder, Laura Hendrickson, grew up in Solana Beach and has traveled to many beaches up and down the coast with her passion for beach volleyball. Now it's time to give back to this beautiful area of San Diego that provides so many of us with fond memories. 14 Beach Volleyball Courts at South Mission Beach Beach Volleyball is becoming a fast growing sport and we support this great activity by maintaining this facility. We paint the poles, purchase nets and lines and coordinate with the city to keep these volleyball courts ready for players all year round. San Diego BIG hosts two main events, The King & Queen Beach Volleyball Celebration (late July) and the San Diego SIX-MAN Volleyball Fest (October) that help bring in funds for these courts. We also support a full range of camps, clinics and other activities that occur at these courts. See our VOLLEYBALL page for a calendar of events and more information. Basketball Court at South Mission Beach This basketball court is part of the sport courts at South Mission Beach which was originally renovated by Bill Walton and several beach volleyball players in 1997. In 2010, we replaced a backboard and painted the support poles at this court. It's been several years and it's time to resurface the court. This project happens every 6-8 years and costs approximately $6800. A proposed 3-on-3 tournament has been suggested for the spring, so if you want to be a part of supporting basketball at the beach, please contact us today!

186 Fire Pits: $173,000 Annually Beach fire pits are a great place for creating fun social memories at the beach. In fact on a busy summer weekend there are people who will come at 3:00 AM and sleep next to the fire pits in order to capture these prime spots for their group and an evening of gathering around the warmth while roasting marshmellows, singing songs and enjoying the smell of the sea air, open sky and creating their own fond memories at the beach. With the budget challenges that San Diego has been facing these specific amenities have been on the chopping block and luckily there have been several institutions that have stepped up last minute and saved them in 2010 and 2011. San Diego BIG would like to support the efforts of the City of San Diego, San Diego Visitors Bureau and Save the Fire Pits of San Diego and create a team effort that supports this special amenity on an ongoing basis. Check out any of these groups or donate here to support the fire pits. With over 186 locations throughout San Diego county, the budget is approximately $173,000.

Stair Access at the South End of Solana Beach: 1.5 Million Stair access to the beach at the south end of Solana Beach provides residents, surfers and visitors access to this pristine area along the bluffs of Solana Beach. This is a quiet and beautiful spot and happens to be a very special place in our founder, Laura Hendrickson. This is where at 9 years old, her Dad would bring her to play beach volleyball, enjoy some body surfing and just soak up the sun. San Diego BIG will be supporting the City of Solana Beach to start funding this project through building awareness of the project and creating a special savings account for this project.

Ocean Beach - Master Clean Up Projects Ocean Beach Main Street Association and the Ocean Beach Town Council are making significant efforts to give Ocean Beach a face lift. They have several organizations helping with street and beach clean ups and they are collaborating to find ways of creating a new look and feel to this wonderful place. Between the beach area, pier, great restaurants, weekly Farmer's Market on Wednesdays nights, Ocean Beach has many prime locations and hidden jewels of San Diego. Please join us in supporting these efforts and visit the Ocean Beach website calendar and taking time to go to there and enjoy everything they have to offer or join in their efforts to do clean ups. In 2011, we were able to host a beach volleyball tournament during the Beach Ball Fest and through our events, silent auction and general efforts donated $500 to their cause.
